Luppis Corporate Identity

It's been a long while and a long silence. I haven't taken any photos since mid November. When the fall semester started, I felt that I needed a break from photography and so I chose classes like graphic design. During this graphic design class, I designed a corporate identity for an imaginary pet product company Luppis. Luppis is a shortened version of the Finnish word luppakorva, which means lop ear. In the end, I'm glad how this turned out. It's a cute and simple design.

I've always been into graphic design, because it's about creating systems - creating a visual language, and that's what I love. However, now that I just finished this project and my semester ended, I'm more than glad to also have time for photography again. Felt already good to photograph these things. Next I'm focusing on my personal projects.

Mexico part 2.

Tässä on joitain ekstrakuvia Meksikosta. Ajattelin jo pari kuukautta sitten, että mun pitäis postata nää kuvat, mutta lopulta unohdin. Otin tolla matkalla pääasiassa aika abstrakteja kuvia. Ne oli osa Romantic in Abstraction -työpajan tehtävää, jota tein siellä reissun päällä. Tehtävä tuntui sekä helpolta, että vaikealta, mutta vaikka nämä kuvat pyrkiikin kohti abstraktia, niin huomaan, että ne myös herättää kaikesta abstraktiudestaan huolimatta voimakkaita muistoja. Muiston kuuman ja kostean ilman tunnusta iholla, tai sen aikaisen aamun kun istuin Tulumissa bussiaseman kylmällä penkillä auringon nousua odottaen, ja siinä jäätyessä ja odotellessa kirjoitin ystävälle postikortin. Postikortin joka ei todennäköisesti koskaan saavu Helsinkiin, mutta joka täytyi silti kirjoittaa. Tai muiston siitä illasta kun palasin hostelliin Meridaan hakemaan muutamia sinne unohtuneita tavaroita, ja sieltä lähtiessä respan tyyppi täytti mun laukun mangoilla. Söin ne mangot seuraavana aamuna Tulumissa - rannalla maailmaa ihmetellen ja ihastellen. 

Asioiden ja kokemusten merkitys kumuloituu aina vasta ajan kanssa. Tärkeintä on muistaa olla kiitollinen.

Here's some extra photos from Mexico. I was thinking to post these already a couple of months ago, but in the end I forgot. On that trip I took mostly quite abstract photos, as that was the assignment for the Romantic in Abstraction workshop. It was both an easy and a difficult task, but even if these images are aiming towards abstract, they do also trigger strong memories in my mind. The feeling of hot and humid air on my skin. The memory of an early morning in Tulum when I sat on a cold bench at the bus station waiting for the sun to rise and, while freezing and waiting, wrote a postcard to a friend. A postcard that will probably never arrive in Helsinki, but which I still had to write. Or the evening when I went back to Merida to get some forgotten things from the hostel I had stayed in, and when leaving the guy in the reception filled my bag with mangoes. In the next morning I ate those mangoes at the beach in Tulum - wondering and admiring the world around me. 

The meaning of things and experiences always accumulates over time. The most important thing is to remember to be grateful.

Tässä on kaikista lopullisin versio kirjasta, jonka parissa oon nyt työskennelly viimeiset pari viikkoa. Printtasin sivut simppelisti koulun lasertulostimella, joten kuvien laatu ei ole mikään paras, mutta muuten oon lopputulokseen ihan tyytyväinen. Tän postauksen lopusta löytyy video, jossa selaan koko kirjan läpi.

Here's the most final version of a book dummy that I've been working on for the past few weeks. I printed it simply at school with a laser printer so the quality of the images is not the best, but otherwise I'm quite much satisfied. In the end of this post you can see the whole book flipped through.

Laho hellyys / Decay tenderness

Pintoja, heijastumia, valoilmiöitä ja mustavalkoisuutta. Taas kerran musta tuntuu siltä etten osaa olla ottamatta valokuvia. Niitä kun on joka puolella. Maailma on yksi ehtymätön valokuvallinen mahdollisuus; leikkikenttä josta voin löytää palan jotakin joka vaikuttaa epätodellisuudelta tai fiktiolta.

Surfaces, reflections, light phenomena and black & white. Once again I feel that I can't be without taking photos. They are everywhere. The world is an endless photographic possibility; a playground where I can find a piece of something that seems unreal or fiction.

Romantic in Abstraction

Tää viikko meni jälleen matkustaessa. Osallistuin "Romantic in Abstraction" -työpajaan, joka järjestettiin Zingstissä, Saksassa. Työpajan aikana meillä oli kolme eri lokaatiota: Zingst, Greifswald ja Rügen. Siitäkin huolimatta, että päivät oli pitkiä ja olin alati väsynyt, niin silti onnistuin saamaan nipun kuvia joista todella tykkään. Paras juttu on, että tunsin löytäväni uudenlaisen suunnan tai jopa parikin uutta suuntaa valokuvauksen suhteen. Täytyy jatkaa noiden parissa. Haluan löytää enemmän kontrasteja ja epätavallisuutta, kuitenkaan menettämättä herkkyyttä.

Toukokuussa on edessä vielä toinen reissu Zingstiin ja huhtikuussa matkustan Berliiniin (sekin on osa työpajaa), joten mahtavia juttuja on edessä!

This week I participated in a workshop called "Romantic in Abstraction" which was held in Zings, Germany. During the workshop we were shooting in three different locations; Zingst, Greifswald and Rügen. Though the days were long and I was constantly tired, still somehow I managed to push myself and take a bunch of photos that I really like. And the best thing is that I felt I found a new direction, or even a couple of new directions that I want to explore more. I want to find more contrasts. More hard edges and uncanny but without losing the sensitive touch. 

In May we'll do another trip to Zingst and in April I'll travel to Berlin (that's part of a workshop too), so fun times ahead!

Teatteria ja tanssia / Theater and dance

Tässä tulee kaksi kuvakokonaisuutta - ensimmäinen on teatteriesityksestä jonka kuvasin jo marraskuussa ja jälkimmäinen taas on tanssiesityksestä, jota olin kuvaamassa viime viikolla. Molemmat kuvaukset oli haastavat sillä sain kuvata molemmista esityksistä vain yhden läpimenon enkä ollut etukäteen nähnyt harjoituksia tai mitään. En siis tiennyt mitä tulee tapahtumaan, mutta nautin kuitenkin hommasta erittäin paljon.

Here's two sets of photos - one from a theater play that I photographed already in November and another from a dance performance that I was shooting last week. Both of these were challenging as I had not seen any rehearsals or anything and I only had one opportunity to take the photos. So I had no idea what was going to happen, but still I enjoyed it a lot.
