the missing elements in me.: Sommelo 2012

Olin viime viikolla talkoolaisvalokuvaajana Sommelo-festivaalilla Kuhmossa. Jotenkin mulla oli voimakas tunne, että tonne mun täytyy mennä, vaikka en ollu koskaan aiemmin edes käynyt tuolla suunnalla Suomea. Ja nyt kun festivaali on päättynyt, niin tiedän, että toi mun tunne oli todellakin aivan oikea. Kuhmo oli kaunis pieni paikka ja Sommelo oli erittäin ihana, sympaattinen ja korkeatasoinen festivaali täynnä mielenkiintoisia ja vaikuttavia esityksiä.

Päivät oli hektisiä etenkin Sommelon loppua kohden, mutta nautin kyllä jokaisesta hetkestä. Oli niin jännittävää hiiviskellä pimeässä - yrittää ollla häiritsemättä esitystä, mutta löytää toimiva kuvakulma josta ottaa kuvia. Ekojen päivien aikana sähläsin muutamaan kertaan aika tavalla, mutta loppua kohden kuvausvarmuus alkoi todella löytyä ja kuvat parani kokoajan. Siitä tuli hyvä tunne.

Joitain asioita ei yksinkertaisesti opita koulussa, ja luulen, että tämä oli yksi niistä. Täytyi vain kuvata, kuvata ja kuvata lisää, että alkoi löytymään se oikea tuntuma miten hommat tehdään. Tietysti jokainen valokuvaaja työskentelee omalla tavallaan, joten ei ole oikeastaan olemassa sääntöjä joiden mukaan toimia. Pari kertaa täytyi mennä yrityksen ja erehdyksen kautta, mutta oon kuitenkin ihan tyytyväinen lopullisiin kuviin.

Last week I was volunteering as a photographer in an ethno music festival called Sommelo. The festival was held in Kuhmo, which is close to the Russian border and about 550km to northeast from Helsinki. I had never been in that area before, but somehow I had a strong feeling that I'll have to go there. And now when the festival is over I can say that my feeling was just right. Kuhmo was a beautiful little place and Sommelo was very nice and high-class festival full of interesting and impressive performances.

The days were hectic, especially towards the end of Sommelo, but I enjoyd every moment of it. It was so exciting to sneak in the dark - trying not to disturb the performances, but to find a good angle to take photos. During the first days I messed up quite much photos, but I'm glad that after mistakes I started to find the right mood and my photos got better and better.

Some things you can never learn in school and I think this was one of those. I had to just take and take photos, and take some more to get the touch how things are done. Of course every photographer works in a different way, so there's really no rules to follow. Few times I had to go through some trial and error but I'm still happy with the final photos.
